Google Ads in AI Mode Hits Canada: What It Means for Service Businesses
Google just told advertisers something worth paying attention to. On October 28, Google announced it's scaling ads in AI Mode to 10 new countries, Canada included. Brazil, Mexico, and the UK are next, planned for Q4 2026. We run Google Ads for service businesses across the US and Canada, so this one landed close to home.
Here's what we know, what we don't, and what we'd actually do about it if we managed your account.
What Google Announced
This came straight from Google's own blog, not a leak or a forum rumor. The exact line: "Now we're scaling ads in AI Mode in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore." Google also said it's launching multiturn ads in the US, meaning ads can now show up in follow-up questions inside an AI Mode conversation, not just the first query.
Google's framing: AI Mode queries run about three times longer than a typical search, and the company says click-through rates on sponsored results inside AI Mode are already tracking close to organic ones. That stat comes from US data gathered between late August and early September 2026, so treat it as directional, not gospel.
Notice what Google didn't say. No mention of small businesses. No mention of service businesses specifically. No new campaign type to opt into. This isn't an "AI Mode campaign" waiting in your dashboard to be built. It's Google widening the countries where ads already surface inside AI Mode's conversational results, the same way they already do in regular Search.
AI Mode Isn't AI Overviews, and It Isn't ChatGPT
We keep seeing these terms used interchangeably. They're not the same thing. AI Overviews are the summary box sitting above regular search results. AI Mode is a separate, full conversational search experience, more back and forth chat than results page. We broke down the AI Overviews side of this in AI Overviews vs PPC, and the platform comparison in Google vs ChatGPT if you want the fuller picture.
The practical difference for you: AI Overviews mostly eat into organic clicks. AI Mode is a destination people choose, and it now has ads baked in from the start across more countries. If your customers are researching "best movers near me" or "HVAC repair cost" as a multi-turn conversation instead of a single search, this is where that conversation is happening.
Why Canada Matters Here
Most of the coverage on this announcement treats it as a US ad-tech story. It isn't, not anymore. Canada sits on the initial list, not the Q4 "coming later" list with Brazil, Mexico, and the UK. If you're a Canadian service business, or a US one running campaigns north of the border, your customers may already be seeing ads inside AI Mode conversations right now.
That matters for a few reasons. Canadian search volume skews toward fewer, higher intent queries for home services like moving, HVAC, and landscaping. If AI Mode queries really do run three times longer than normal searches, the intent signal inside those conversations is richer than a four-word keyword search. Whoever shows up well there gets a cleaner shot at a qualified lead.
What We'd Actually Do With This
We're not telling clients to panic or restructure accounts overnight. A few things are worth doing now, though.
• Check that your Performance Max and Search campaigns have asset groups with enough creative variety to serve well in a conversational context, not just a static results page. We cover the asset side of this in Performance Max for Service Businesses.
• Tighten your offline conversion tracking now, before attribution gets murkier. A multiturn AI Mode session doesn't behave like a single-query search session, and if your CRM and ad platform already disagree on lead counts, this will make it worse, not better. We walk through the fix in What is Offline Conversion Tracking?
• Revisit your AI Max for Search settings if you've already turned them on. AI Max leans into broader match and automated creative, exactly the kind of setup that tends to get pulled into newer ad surfaces first. We laid out what to lock down in AI Max for Search: What Service Businesses Need to Lock Down Now.
• Don't chase this by building something new. There's no AI Mode-specific campaign to launch yet. Spend your energy on account fundamentals instead, the kind we talked through after Google Marketing Live 2026.
• Watch lead quality specifically, not just volume. We've seen plenty of service businesses chase impressions on a new surface and end up with the same junk lead problem we flagged in ChatGPT Ads for Service Businesses in 2026.
• If you're doing any AI search optimization work alongside your paid efforts, this expansion is one more reason to keep that content current. We cover the overlap in AI Search Optimization for Service Businesses.
What We Don't Know Yet
Google didn't publish advertiser-facing setup instructions with this announcement, just the country list and the click-through rate claim. We don't know yet whether this changes bidding behavior, whether it shows up as a distinct placement in reporting, or whether smaller service business budgets will see meaningful volume from it in month one. We'll update this once we see it move the needle in an actual account, not before.
For now, the honest answer is this: it's early, it's real, and it's worth watching closely if you're running Google Ads in Canada, the US, or any of the nine other countries Google just named.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is "ads in AI Mode"?
Ads in AI Mode are sponsored results that show up inside Google's conversational AI Mode search experience, a separate feature from standard search results and from AI Overviews. Google labels them "Sponsored."
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews are the summary box above regular search results. AI Mode is a full, separate conversational search experience, more like a chat interface than a results page.
Does this affect my existing Google Ads campaigns automatically?
Google hasn't announced a new campaign type or opt-in process tied to this expansion. Existing Search and Performance Max campaigns are the ones most likely to surface in these new placements as Google scales the feature.
Why does Canada matter specifically?
Canada is one of the 10 countries in this initial expansion, not on the "coming later" list with Brazil, Mexico, and the UK. If you run Google Ads for a Canadian service business, this is live territory now.
What should I actually do about this right now?
Tighten your offline conversion tracking, review your Performance Max asset groups, and keep watching your lead quality metrics. There's no new campaign to build yet.
