ChatGPT Ads for Service Businesses in 2026
OpenAI opened self-serve ad buying to small and medium businesses across North America this past summer, and on October 5 it announced a new visual ad format rolling out this month. So the question we're getting from clients now isn't "will ChatGPT ever run ads." It already does. The question is whether a moving company, an HVAC contractor, or a landscaper should actually put budget behind it yet.
We've already covered how ChatGPT is reshaping organic visibility and how AI Overviews are eating into click-through on Google. This post is different. This is about the paid product itself: what OpenAI actually shipped, what it costs to test, and what's still missing compared to the platforms you already run.
What OpenAI actually launched
Here's the timeline, pulled straight from OpenAI's own posts. In May, OpenAI began rolling out a beta self-serve Ads Manager that let advertisers "sign up and purchase ads directly," with CPC bidding added alongside the existing CPM model. By the end of August, OpenAI said self-service access had expanded to advertisers "across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa," and confirmed that opening the Ads Manager had "opened the platform to small and medium-sized businesses, which now represent a material share of the business."
Then on October 5, OpenAI announced a new visual ad format that shows products and services through images generated inside ChatGPT. That one is still in testing. OpenAI's own language is "later this month" for an "initial group of advertisers," limited to Free and Go plan users in the US during image generation. It is not a general release yet, and it is not a search or chat placement. Keep that distinction straight if anyone pitches you on "ChatGPT search ads." That product doesn't exist yet in the way Google Search ads do.
What does exist, right now, for a service business: sign-up at ads.openai.com, platform and geographic targeting, custom audiences, and conversion tracking through a Conversions API and pixel. That's a real, buyable product. It is also a young one.
Should you test it
If you're a well-established service business with ROAS targets already being hit on your core channels, a small test budget here makes sense for two reasons. First, being an early advertiser on a platform usually means cheaper CPMs before the auction gets crowded, the same pattern we saw with Meta years ago. Second, this ties directly into AI search optimization: the brands showing up in paid placements inside ChatGPT right now are also the ones most likely to get cited when someone asks ChatGPT a related question later. Visibility compounds.
If your account is still in a learning phase, or you're fighting for baseline volume on Google and Meta, this isn't the channel to chase first. We tell clients the same thing we'd tell anyone testing a new platform: treat the first few months as data collection, not a performance bet. No panic-optimizing a five-figure monthly budget into a product that's eight months old.
Practically, that means a capped test budget, tight negative keyword style exclusions on targeting where available, and your own conversion tracking layered on top since the platform's native measurement is still maturing. Treat every lead from it with the same scrutiny you'd apply anywhere else. Source it, tag it, and don't count it until it's a booked job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT Ads available to all service businesses right now?
Self-serve access through Ads Manager is live for small and medium businesses in North America, Europe, India, and the Middle East and North Africa as of OpenAI's August 2026 announcement. Access rolled out gradually, so sign up at ads.openai.com and confirm availability for your account before budgeting around it.
Can I run ChatGPT ads that generate phone calls like Local Services Ads?
Not natively yet. There's no built in call tracking or lead-gen campaign objective comparable to Google Ads or Meta lead forms. You'd need to layer your own conversion tracking and call tracking on top to measure it properly.
How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?
OpenAI supports both CPM and CPC bidding through Ads Manager, with businesses setting their own budgets, bids, and pacing. There's no published minimum spend specific to service businesses, which makes it workable as a small test budget alongside your existing Google and Meta spend.
Is the new ChatGPT image ad format live yet?
As of OpenAI's October 5, 2026 announcement, the visual ad format was still in testing with an initial group of advertisers, limited to Free and Go plan users in the US during image generation. It had not rolled out broadly at the time of writing.
Should I pull budget from Google Ads or Meta to test ChatGPT ads?
No. Treat it as incremental test spend, not a replacement. Your core channels already have the tracking, targeting, and lead-gen tooling built out. ChatGPT Ads is still young enough that it belongs in the experimental slice of your budget, not the core.
