AI Max for Search: What Service Businesses Need to Lock Down Now

Google started auto-upgrading Dynamic Search Ads and campaign-level broad match to AI Max this month. If you run search campaigns for a service business and haven't touched this yet, Google is going to touch it for you.

Here's what's actually happening, what breaks if you ignore it, and what to lock down before your account gets migrated on Google's schedule instead of yours.

What AI Max actually is

AI Max for Search bundles three things into your search campaigns: broad match with keywordless targeting, AI-written text customization, and final URL expansion. Google's pitch is that campaigns using all three see roughly 7% more conversions at a similar cost per acquisition. Maybe. We'd want to see that on our own accounts before repeating it as fact, and you should too.

What matters more than the conversion lift claim is the mechanic underneath it. Broad match with keywordless technology means Google is matching your ads to queries you never typed into the campaign. Text customization means Google is rewriting your headlines and descriptions based on what it thinks will convert a given searcher. Final URL expansion means Google can send a click to a page on your site other than the one you set as the landing page, if its model thinks another page converts better.

Individually, none of this is new. Broad match versus phrase match has always been a control tradeoff. What's new is Google bundling all three into one automated layer and rolling it out as the default for search campaigns, whether you opted in or not. It's the same consolidation logic behind Local Services Ads moving into Google Ads: fewer separate products, more of your account decided inside one automated system.

The timeline you're actually on

New Dynamic Search Ads campaigns can no longer be created. Automatic upgrades for Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match are proceeding on schedule this month. The full DSA sunset, force-converting every remaining campaign, got pushed from September to February 2027. That's not a reason to relax. It means the accounts getting touched right now are the ones already running broad match or DSA, with more to follow as Google widens the net.

If you've been putting off looking at this because "the deadline moved," the deadline that matters for most service business accounts already passed.

Where this actually hurts service businesses

A landscaper running one campaign for one service in one city has less to worry about here. A multi-location HVAC company running install, repair, and maintenance campaigns off different landing pages has a real problem: final URL expansion doesn't know the difference between a page that converts a browser and a page that converts a homeowner with no heat. Send an emergency repair search to your maintenance plans page and you've bought a click that was never going to book.

This compounds with a change from earlier this year. Call-only ad formats went away in February, which pushed phone-first trades like HVAC and plumbing toward responsive search ads. That means the landing page a click lands on now matters more than it used to for businesses that used to skip the landing page entirely and go straight to a phone call. Pair that shift with URL expansion deciding which page gets the click, and you've got two changes stacked on top of each other in the same account.

Restoration and moving companies with separate local versus long-distance or separate emergency versus non-emergency campaigns have the same exposure. If your Google Ads auction is already sending you leads that don't match your service area or your actual capacity, AI Max without guardrails makes that worse, not better, because it's now making landing page decisions on top of match-type decisions.

What to actually do about it

Set final URL expansion exclusions before you let Google auto-upgrade you. This is a page feed setting where you tell Google which URLs are off-limits for expansion, and it's the single highest-leverage control you still have. If you have a page that isn't built to convert, or a page for a service you don't actually offer anymore, exclude it now rather than finding out later it's been eating budget.

Audit your negative keyword lists before migration, not after. Negative lists built up over months or years protect your budget from junk traffic, and there's no guarantee everything ports over cleanly during an automatic conversion. Export what you have. Know what you're supposed to see post-migration.

Fix your conversion signal before you fix anything else. AI Max, like every automated bidding layer before it, optimizes for whatever you tell it to optimize for. If your account is tracking form fills or calls instead of booked jobs, you'll get more form fills and more calls, and your close rate will do the explaining later when Google Ads and your CRM disagree on lead counts. This is the same reason we run every account on real revenue signals, not proxy metrics. If the AI is optimizing toward the wrong outcome, more automation just gets you the wrong outcome faster.

Test on your terms before Google tests on theirs. Migrate a lower-stakes campaign, watch it for two to three weeks, and compare it against a DSA or standard search campaign running in parallel. You want to know what a good ROAS actually looks like for your business under the new setup before your whole account gets swept into it by default.

None of this is a reason to avoid AI Max entirely. Google's automation has gotten genuinely better, and the direction was clear from Google Marketing Live 2026 onward. It's a reason to go in with exclusions set, negatives audited, and signals clean, instead of finding out what broke after the auto-migration already ran.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI Max for Search campaigns?

AI Max is Google's bundled upgrade for search campaigns that combines broad match with keywordless targeting, AI-generated text customization, and final URL expansion. It's rolling out as the default replacement for Dynamic Search Ads and campaign-level broad match.

Is Dynamic Search Ads going away completely?

New DSA campaigns can no longer be created. Existing DSA and broad match campaigns are being auto-upgraded to AI Max on a rolling basis starting this month. The full forced sunset of remaining DSA campaigns was pushed from September 2026 to February 2027.

Will AI Max send my leads to the wrong service page?

It can, unless you set final URL expansion exclusions. Google's model chooses which page a click lands on unless you explicitly rule pages out through a page feed. Businesses running multiple services or locations off separate landing pages are the most exposed.

Do I have to migrate before the deadline?

If you're running DSA or campaign-level broad match, Google is already migrating some accounts automatically. Migrating on your own schedule, with exclusions and negatives set first, gives you more control than waiting for an automatic conversion to happen to you.

Does AI Max work with call-only ads?

No. Call-only formats were phased out earlier in 2026, so businesses that relied on them are now running responsive search ads, where the landing page AI Max sends traffic to actually matters for conversion.
